Note: This citation is a problem, and may be an index to a much larger problem. I currently (2021.01.29) have two citations to this source:

  • Tarphonomus harterti (Berlepsch) 1892 Jahr.Allgem.Deutsch.Orn.Gesell. p.10
  • Crypturellus atrocapillus garleppi (Berlepsch) 1892 Jahr.Allgem.Deutsch.Orn.Gesell. p.13
  • I can infer the basis for using one, but must speculate (so far) for the other. Conventionally these are give as:

  • Tarphonomus harterti (Berlepsch) 1892 J.Orn. 40 no.200 p.452
  • Crypturellus atrocapillus garleppi (Berlepsch) 1892 J.Orn. 40 no.200 p.454
  • These pages in the J.Orn. are (as I understand it) copies of the Jahr.Allgem.Deusch.Gesell. so the questions are:

Evidence for publication of Jarh.Allgem.Deutsch.Orn.Gesell. separate from the J.Orn.

J.Asiat.Soc.Bengal The Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal [2021.03.06 will adopt the convetion of capital P for Pt.] A very problematic publishing history. The work "Priority!" (2011) by Dickinson and others includes a CD with a tabular presentation of some data having implications about the dates of publication as well as a very helpful discussion of some of what is known of the publishing history (and problems). As the authors there note, many problems and uncertainties remain. My work suggests that the problems may be even greater than those authors appear to recognize. A note (J.Asiat.Soc.Bengal VIII: iii. states:

"Contributors are deemed entitled to 50 copies of their papers, which will be forwarded, bearing postage, by letter or banghy dâk wherever they direct. Copies of the Journal are dispatched by each Overland Mail to the leading Periodicals in Europe and America."

Thus it appears that a system of publishing author's separates was in place, The timing of this distribution (which would certainly appear to satisfy the requirements for being a "publication") is at present (2020.04.06) unkown. I speculate that they could very easily have been distributed prior to the distribution of the monthly numbers. Neave 2:768 -- [1860] 1859. CWR note: "Not publ. until after Jan.22, 1860, see p.463" Schulze Band 3 Lief 13 p.1670 -- "1859 [1860 VII]" JULY???? (=VII). Colobris rufiventris Heine 1860 J.Orn. Nov. 1859 7(1859) no.42 p.406 Pitta erythrogaster rufiventris (Heine) H&M p.338 -- 1859 Peters 8:317 (Mayr -- not good on dates here): -- 1859 CWR note: "Not publ. until after Jan.22, 1860, see p.463" Thus H&M follows Peters' inconsistencies in the dates of taxa from this volume (7) and number (42) dating it sometimes to 1859 (which we can assume is the imprint date) and once (Illadopsis) to 1860. The evidence in support of 1860 for all taxa from "no.42" includes: 1.) CWR's date and his note suggesting there is evidence on p.463 2.) Deignan's use of 1860 for Illadopsis (but he very well may simply have been following Richmond). 3.) Neave's apparently independant use of 1860. 4.) Shulze et al. using not just 1860, but dating this to July of 1860. 5.) Number 40 of this volume was accessioned by the Smithsonian on May 19, 1860 and thus it seems quite unlikely that even the numerically preceeding number was published in 1859 (though it must be noted that not only were the J.Orn. numbers usually long-delayed from their "specified dates" but also the sequence of publication does not always match the numerical order). The 1860 VII indicates a publishing date of July, 1860 for the November 1859 issue of J.Orn. (a delay of 8-9 months), and thus we can understand the consistent, contemporaneous, complaints about delayed publication of the Journal.

  • This number could possibly be dated 31 Dec. 1860 if additional evidence becomes available, but an 1860 date is unproven, the specified date is disproven and a date of 1860 is extremely unlikely; currently dated to 1861 by APP.

  • S.I. acc. 1864.10.19 (p.160)
  • The pagination and signature structure of this number is of interest. 80 is the last page of the previous number so 81 would be expected to be found starting no.68. However no.68 starts with [97],98-112, followed by 97-160 (!) so pp. numbered 97-112 occur twice with different material on each.
    • As Daria Wingreen-Mason of the Cullman Library explains (in litt. 2006.05.12) "pages 81-96 (signature 6) misnumbered as 97-112, correct pagination resumes with signature 7."
    • The pagination can be given as [97],98-112,97[bis]-112[bis],113-160.
    • The signature notations, 6,6*,7,7*,8,8*,&c occur regularly through.

  • S.I. acc. 1865.07.10 (p.466)
  • It is clear that this number was not published until sometime in 1865.
    • On p.466, reference is made to an index of Consp.Gen.Av. published by E.J. Brill in 1865.
    • The cover (wrapper) includes a note indicating that the first two Hefte of 1865 have already been published.
    • The first two Hefte of 1865 have covers with notes proclaiming the future publication of the final ("Das Schluss") heft of 1864.
  • There is proof of delay until 1865, and establisment of the fact that the Numbers of this serial were not always published sequentially.
  • My interpretation of the Code indicates that the date for this Heft (Number 72) must currently be held to be 7 July 1865 (the accession date at the Smithsonian Institution. I would be interested to know of any earlier accession date for this Number.

"Das Schluss-Heft des Jahrgangs 1864 wird in 14 Tagen nachgeliefert werden." I intperpret this as:
"The final heft of the year 1864 will be delivered late in 14 days"

Which I translate:"The first Heft of 1867 appeared in the end of January 1867. The second heft is in press."

Vol. 21 = yr. 21 ser.4 vol.1 no.123 May "published in June or later" [CWR: Ostinops atrocastaneus] CWR notes that the Ibis 1891, p.616 contains some information regarding the dates of publication from the period 1887-1890. Edward Dickinson indicates (in litt. 2004.12.19) that this note gives evidence of tardy delivery of copies of the Journal to the UK and does not provide specific evidence that the publication itself was delayed, although it may suggest it. However there is unquestioned specific evidence of serious delay (see note below for Vol.34 "1887"). XXXV 1887 = 1888 179 Juli [225]-336 Pencil notes on S.I. T.P for no.179:
    • "publ. Jan. 1888?"

      • Note: on p.298 of this "Juli" number, at the foot of Eckstein's article is the line. "Eberswalde, den 12. October 1887" This can not be interpreted as anything other than incontrovertible evidence of delay.]
      • Thus, we know there was delay, and the only current evidence of it's existence as a published entity is in January of 1888.

Vol. 37 CWR note for Vanellus leucopterus Reichenow 1889, says "Ibis, 1891, 616 for date of publ.!" [Summary of problems and questions: 1. It is not clear that the hefte appeared in numerical sequence. In fact it appears very likely that they did not always appear in sequence. 2. It is clear that at least by the 3rd vol. (1855) that hefte were frequently (perhaps usually) delayed past the imprint month. 3. The cover notes indicate the publisher's awareness of public concern over the delays in publiction. These notes often only increase uncertainty about the actual dates of publication, without providing certainty. 4. It is probably reasonable to remain skeptical of the dates of apparent certainty that are supplied by the cover notes.]

In a note from Richmond to Stone "Feb. 26, 1920" Richmond comments.
Of the J.f.O. our file is quite incomplete; we have Jan. + Apr.
    of 1916, April, 1917, + a Sonderheft for Apr. 1917,
    + 1919 complete + 1915 complete. I have not sent any notes
on the J.f.O., as I believe you do not want to take up fragments
    of the Journal.
