The X-axis is the "Taxonomic position" -- that is the linear sequence of location in a one dimensional list of names: Ostrich at 01, and Bobolink at 9944. The Y-axis is the year of authority for the given taxon, and the plots are partitioned by journals: J.Orn., PZS, Ibis, and BBOC.

The vast majority of published names were in the PZS, with significant additional activity in the Ibis. The BBOC seems to have taken up activity as it decreased in the Ibis and the PZS.
