Zoological Citation Notes --Z

• Lesson gives the type locality as "Californie".
• As Peters Checklist 9385 (= Paynter 1960) notes, Brodkorb subsitutes Orizaba, Mexico for the type locality.
• Paynter, however cites Brodkorb to "1942, Condor, 49, p. 242." a citation that clearly can not be correct. Examination of the Condor, shows that the typographic error is in the date, which should be 1947, not 1942.

• Elevated to species level by AOU CL 49^th Supplement 2008 p.760

• There is variability in the way this citation is given:
  1. The Richmond Index has pt. I July 28, 1876 p.345 pl.112
  2. Peters CL 12:220 has p.343 pl.111
  3. CBBM 9:117 has p.343 p. 111 fig.3
  4. Sclater 1930 Syst.Av.Aeth. 2:708 has p.243 pl. iii
  5. The Type list for BrMus. gives p.343 pl.111
• Dr David Donsker examined his personal copy, noting that pages and the plates (and even the figures) are not numbered. The references, as given come from the front matter, which Dr Donsker confirmed by direct count in his copy.
• The discrepant count by Richmond raises the possibility that all sets may not be bound in exactly the same way.

• Arcese, P., M. K. Sogge, A. B. Marr, and M. A. Patten. 2002. Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia). In The Birds of North America, No. 704 (A. Poole and F. Gill, eds.). The Birds of North America, Inc., Philadelphia, PA. in discussing M.m.adusta place M.m.zacapu in synonomy.

• Usually cited to 1865. However, the Richmond Index for this taxon has a note:

  "Nov.", 1865 Publ. 1866

  The notes on the covers of these issues would support that interpretation.

• Originally described in Ptilopus and for this reason H&M 3^rd:175 and HBW 4:209 place the authority in parentheses.
• It appears to me that Ptilopus is an 1841 Strickland emendation of Swainson's Ptilinopus. As an emendation it appears to me that it implies that the authority here should not be in parentheses.

• Peters Checklist 4:6 lists the date as 1937, though this was published 27 May, 1938. HBW 4:500 has the correct date.

• This name is frequently (e.g. Peters Checklist 4:82; H&M 3 ^rd:219; HBW 5:71) listed as 1838.
• The Richmond Index shows that this is in "no.9" of Pt III, and shows a date of July, 1839.
• Zimmer 1926 cites Sherborn's work on this {Ann.Mag.Nat.Hist.,(6) 20, p.483} where it is shown that this was published in July of 1839.

• Names from this work are usually dated to 1806.
• Mathews 1925:37 indicates that this was published in 1805. His dating is based (apparently in part) upon the preface being dated Sept. 27, 1805. He states "published before Dec. 6th, 1805".

  Here Mathews makes clear that Dumeril was reviewed in detail in the Journ.
  Typogr. for December 6, 1805. This seems to me to be verifiable and thus
  acceptable.
  

• Placement within Heliangelus is uncertain.
• Placed before H. regalis, based on Graves' idea that it bridges the gap between H. regalis and other members of the genus.

• Treated as a subspecies by Peters 7:287. Elevated to species level by Krabbe and Schulenberg Remsen, 1998

• In order and interpretation of species limits I have tried to follow Johnson & Clayton 2000.

• The original description reads:

  Zavattarionis genus novum.
  Becco slanciato un poco curvo, subeguale al capo; narici rotonde
  ricoperte totalmente dalle setole; mascella superiore con culmine
  distinto; redini e zona perioculare nude; sui margini liberi
  delle palpebre esistono a guisa di ciglia alcune piume piliforme nere
  non molto lenghe; remiganti e tiomoniere nere in contrasto non quasi
  tutto il restante piumaggio; statura minore di quella di un Garrulus.
  

• The ICZN initially in 1985 [Art 30(a)(ii)] and reaffirmed in 2000 [Art. 30.1.4.3] treats gender in this manner:
  • "A compound genus-group name ending in -ops is to be treated as masculine, regardless of its derivation or of its treatment by its author."
• Zosterops is a compound formed from Gr. zoster - belt or girdle, and ops - the eye.
