Alternate Title Isis, oder Encyclopadische Zeitung 1817-1819 Isis 1820-1848 _________________________________________________ Additional notes: The Richmond Index also refers to Hefte. (vol. XIX has Hefte "X"). In addition Richmond has two cards for (for example) Dryobates Boie 1826 one lists "Isis [von Oken] Bd. XIX, Hefte X" and gives p.977 the next lists "Isis XXI" and also gives p.977. This pattern appears to be a "typo". _________________________________________________ ref. Kertesz GA. "Notes on Isis Von Oken, 1817-1848" 1986. Isis 77:497-503 Apparently the Journal was initially published weekly, but later 12 issues per year were published. "The first issue was published in August 1816, but dated 1817." (p.499) "... in weekly parts 9 though 11, in October 1816, he [Oken] published his first political article." (p.499) One issue, that reported on the Wartburg Festival in Oct. 1817, was confiscated by the government. Following this act, the figures on the masthead were changed with the figure of Osiris being replaced by Isis's son Harpocrates (Horus). The interpretation is that Horus' raised hand is interpreted to command silence. Additionally, a figure drawn to illustrate a report of Wied-Neiuwied's expedition to Brasil was redrawn and shown with a padlock through his protruding lips. This appeared as a "vignette" in several issues later on. Title: The initial contract specified that the title would be "Encyklopädische Blätter" It appeared in August 1816 as "Isis oder Encyklopädische Zeitung" (Jg. 1817 - Jg. 1827) Kertesz maintains that "It was only in 1833 that Isis was given, on the title page of the monthly issues (though not on the the annual volume), a new subtitle: "Encyclopedic Journal Especially for Natural History, Comparative Anatomy, and Physiology." Hölzinger 1991 "Die Vö Baden-Wüttemburgs Band 7 Bibliographie" p.153 indicates, in contrast, that the title became "Isis Enzyklopädische Zeitwchrift, vorzüglich fü Naturgeschichte, vergleichende Anatomie und Physiologie." in 1827 Apparently there were both monthly and annual title pages. _________________________________________________ Bibliographic citations suggest that at least twice (8,9 & 10,11) yearly volumes may have been combined? Currently the taxa I list have the following association between the year of publication and the "volume" number: Year # 1821 8,9 1822 10,11 1826 19 1827 20 1828 21 1829 22 1830 23 1831 24 1832 25 1833 26 1841 34 1842 35 1843 36 1844 37 1845 38 1847 40 1848 41
