Cat.BirdsBrit.Mus. Catalogue of Birds in the British Museum A note on the OCR ascii texts: I downloaded the OCR versions of the 27 volumes and make them available here. I have corrected many OCR error, and continue to correct them, so the versions here differ considerably from the OCR versions provided by the Biodiversity Heritage Library. I hope I am correcting more errors than I am introducing, but it can be difficult to be sure. These ASCII files can nonethelss be very useful, especially if you have even minimal proficiency at ascii text manipulation. Many Unix/Linux tools exist for the process, and they are fast, efficient, widely used, and FREE, which is why many major software firms don't talk about them very much. If you have an Apple/Mac, these tools are already resident on your machine. I warn you again, MANY OCR errors are present in these large files, but at least I find them very useful. Did I mention that they are large? The total for the 27 volumes is 929,439 non-blank lines. 6,559,623 words Given the MANY OCR errors, these files may be most useful for providing a quick way to access important materials in the volumes themselves. Birds of Australia. p.68 Mathews date(s) are almost certainly wrong. The Sept. 15, 1854 date apparently is based on the signing date by Dr Horsfield at the foot of p.vi, so actual publication must have been subsequent to this. That page can be seen here: End of Introductory Remarks p.vi BHL image ] [Note: Sharpe comments in his introduction to this work in Ibis, 1876 " 'Catalogue of the Birds of the Museum of the East India Company,' a work which bears on its title-page the names of Dr. Horsfield and Mr. F. Gray, G.R. 1859 [ = 1860 ] [Question of 1859 vs 1860 publication date was asked of Rex Banks, Head Libr. at Brit.Mus.N.H. His email response 94.02.25 is below.] > Dear Alan, > Our Librarian at Tring has checked this. There is no definite > evidence of an 1860 date. She says: > "The title page has the date 1859, so do all the bibliographies > and catalogues I've looked at including the Catalogue of Birds in > the BM and our Catalogue of Types (we have the type of macgillivrayi). > The book is only 72 pages and must have been published as one item > rather than as parts. > "It is therefore odd that Peters Checklist has 1859 (?=1860) in > his first edition altered to 1860 (1859) in the second edition > - now followed by Sibley & Monroe, the latest taxonomic work. > > "However, > a) the preface is dated Ist October 1859 so it must > have been published right at the end of 1859, if not 1860. > b) it isn't mentioned in the Ibis of January 1860 but > is noted in the April 1860 issue - `an early copy received'. > c) one of our copies has the accession number 60.3.-7.2. > pencilled on the back of the title page. > Could that mean that the Museum > received its copy in the March of 1860?" > > So, Alan, I would say that circumstantial evidence tends to indicate an > 1860 date of actual publication. > > Yours sincerely, > Rex. It would appear that there is evidence to hand that determines the date of publication to be 1860, and not 1859. Sherborn C. Davies. 1934. Ann.Mag.Nat.Hist. (10) 13:309 lists "Catal. Birds . . . INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS regarding style/format.

XV "No important changes of style or format will be found in the book." p.v.
X Editors function to "achieve a degree of uniformity in written style..." p.v
    		XIII No comment regarding style.
    		I(2)	No comment regarding style.
VIII	No comment regarding (Zimmer's) style.
    		XI	No comment regarding style.

While the inconsistency in approach is, in my view, inexcusable, I offer some comments
in support of the approach that most workers appear to misinterpret.
When the date-published differs from the imprint date, the date-of-publication is
supplied information. It is a general and reasonable custom to include information
that is added by the author in parentheses (or more often brackets [ ]). I think
this may be the rationale that was employed in some, but not all volumes.

    	Additional notes:

Vol. IX: seems to be particularly lax in terms
of editorial consistency. An example (noted by Dickinson) comes from contrasting
Coracina novaehollandiae nipalensis (p.170) and Coracina melaschitos
(p.193). Delacour's section on Aegithina also has a number of obvious errors (see
    		A. v. thapsina).

[British Museum Catalogue appears to list two copies at Tring, and gives publication dates 1884-1892, and 1884-1896 (!)] Fascicules published out of numerical sequence. Plate and page from fascicule 39 included in fascicule 16. Dates of publication: The fascicules were not published in numerical order, and in addtion in several instances multiple fascicules were issued in wrappers as a group. The individual fascicules may have fascicule title page dates that pre-date the wrapper date, but since they were clearly issued as a group, the last date in the group must be treated as the date of publication. My collation suggests a sequence of publication like this: Fascicule Date of pub. * indicates state-of-completion table on back wrapper 1 1884.12 # # Indicates reviewed by L.S. (? • Zimmer indicates his dating is based on a review in The Ibis.
  • It seems one must consider the possibility that copies were released prior to the imprint dates. (?) [See fascicule V below.]
  • Fascicule I is noticed in the Review of Recent Orn. Lit. in the April 1885 issue of the Ibis.

  • Zimmer's dating this fascicle to March of 1885 is based on a review in the Ibis. It certainly contrasts with the wrapper date of Juin 1885.
  • The April 1885 Ibis review mentions only fascicule I. It appears to me that in April of 1885 only fascicules 1 and 33 would have been published. I have not found an Ibis review that would date fascicule V to March 118.

Contrib.Orn.[Jardine] Contributions to Ornithology Contrib.Orn.[Jardine] PARTIAL BHL images limited to 1850-1852q 1848-52(53) London 2v. 95 plates Vol. 1 text, Vol. 2 atlas "A subscription work issued in parts with somewhat irregular pagination. It may therefore be regarded as a periodical publication, or the first British periodical publication devoted to ornithology." Nat.Union.Cat. entry See: Dickinson, Overstreet, Bruce, and Dowsett. Zoological Bibliography. Jardine's "Contributions to Ornithology" 1848-1853: I. Page and plate numbering and issue limits. (2010) II. Contents and dates of issue. (2011) This confused and confusing publication is treated in detail by these authors, and some, but not all, uncertainties are resolved. The results that they publish are, in their words "speculative". [ Appears to have been reissued with changes. Ptilonopus strophium Peters Checklist 3:034, "Name altered to Ptilonopus cinctus in the 1860 reissue of Jardines Cont. Orn. p.105 note." ] Murray Bruce has examined the question of these dates further and in some detail. He determines that the last part of the work (from pp. 141-162) was all that was issued in 1853. Murray kindly forwarded the results of his work on this problem, and I include his discussion here:
Nissen C. "Die Illustratrierten Vogelbücher Ihre Geschichte und Bibliographie". Hiersemann Verlag. Stuttgart. 1953 has a collation of this work (p.128). It is as follows.
Year No. of Pts. S. (Seite = pages) Taf. (Tafel = plates) Notes
    1848 3 63 1-3, 5-8, 10-12 APP: 10 pls.
    1849 7 II, 1-15, 17-29, 31-138 13-22, 24-40 APP: 27 pls.
    1850 7 I-IV, 1-80, 67-82, 85-160 (=106), 105*, 106*, 107-153 42-45, 48, 59, 61-66 APP: 12 pls. cf.21 listed above.
NOTE:! this appears to be explained by a typographic error in Nissen; Anker (p.148) lists the plates as "4859" not "48, 59". This makes the pll. count 25, and 4 pll. are uncolored and may not be thus counted in CWR's tally (above).
1851 (1852) 6 II, 163 67-81 APP: 15 pls. cf.14 listed above. Two pll. are uncolored, which (by the reasoning above) would suggest a tally of "13" for CWR. So there is still a slight discrepancy.
    1852 (1853) IV, 162 82-101 APP: 20 pls.

It also must be noted (2008.07.13) that there are questions that relate to attribution of authority. Many taxa are ascribed to "Jardine & Fraser", though it is of interest that in the Richmond Index, Richmond attributes these taxa to Jardine, and has "Jardine & Fraser" in quotes -- the approach he uses when he is indicating manuscript names. These taxa may be correctly attributed to Jardine & Fraser, but in my opinion this issue needs to be addressed by appropriate examination of the work itself. For working notes I include a list of taxa where I believe this question arises.
